An attack by paramilitary forces on Tuesday evening killed 40 people in a central Sudan village, a medic told AFP, amid escalating violence in Al-Jazira state.

"All 40 victims suffered gunshot wounds," the medic said from Wad Rawah Hospital, north of Wad Oshaib village, speaking anonymously due to repeated attacks on medical personnel.

The assault is the latest in a series of RSF attacks on Al-Jazira villages following a key paramilitary commander's defection to the army last month.
