Algeria and Russia aim to reconcile after tensions spurred by Wagner Group attacks
This photograph taken on December 3, 2024, shows the newly-inaugurated bronze statue in the likeness of the late Wagner private mercenary group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin (L), and his right-hand man Dmitru Utkin (R), erected in front of the "Maison Russe" (Russian House) in Bangui.

Algeria and Russia are actively working to mend their strained relationship, exacerbated by differences over Sahel and Libya issues and Russia's military activities in North Africa. Vyacheslav Volodin, Russia's State Duma Speaker, plans a visit to Algiers soon, his second in six months, amidst these diplomatic efforts. The initiative follows a contentious period marked by a Wagner Group airstrike near Algeria's border, leading to Algerian calls for UN intervention and heightened discussions on improving bilateral ties and communication.
