Ibrahim Boughali, the Speaker of Algeria's lower house of parliament, called on Thursday on France to officially recognize its responsibility for nuclear crimes during its colonial rule in Algeria. At an event marking the anniversary of France's first nuclear test in Algeria in 1960, Boughali stressed the need for France to make a clear moral commitment beyond just political acknowledgment, reported Anadolu. He noted that France carried out 17 nuclear tests in southern Algeria until 1966 and demanded compensation for the victims and cleanup of the nuclear waste.
