Algeria condemns French minister’s visit to Western Sahara

Algeria criticized French Culture Minister Rachida Dati’s visit to Western Sahara, calling it a disregard for international legality. The trip follows France’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed territory. Algeria, which backs the Polisario Front, argues the visit reinforces Morocco’s control. The UN considers Western Sahara a non-self-governing territory and in October 2024 called for negotiations to reach a mutually acceptable solution. Morocco rejects independence, advocating autonomy under its rule.
