Algerians are set to vote in a presidential election Saturday, with incumbent President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expected to secure an easy victory for a second term, AFP reports. His main challenge is boosting turnout, as his 2019 win saw a record 60% abstention rate. Tebboune, 78, aims to strengthen his mandate, seeking a “normal” presidency after his controversial election during the Hirak protests.
Tebboune’s main challengers, Islamist Abdelaali Hassani and socialist Youcef Aouchiche, are unlikely to pose significant threats. Tebboune’s platform focuses on stabilizing Algeria's economy, reducing its reliance on hydrocarbons, and addressing past corruption. However, economic hardships, including high living costs, dominate concerns among voters. Many young voters express a desire to leave the country, while others remain undecided or committed to voting for stability.
Tebboune’s leadership has the backing of the country’s major political parties, althgough the election is set against a backdrop of dissatisfaction over political freedoms and economic challenges.
