In a televised interview broadcasted yesterday, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune described French President Emmanuel Macron as the "sole point of reference" for repairing strained ties between the two nations, according to AFP.

"He remains the French president, and all problems must be resolved with him or his appointed representatives," Tebboune stated.

Tensions between Algeria and France have reached their highest levels in decades. The fallout began last summer when France recognized Morocco’s claims over Western Sahara — a move Algeria strongly opposes. Relations worsened further when Algeria refused to accept deported Algerian nationals from France, accused of inciting violence. The arrest of Boualem Sansal, a French-Algerian writer known for his criticism of the Algerian government, in November, added to the diplomatic strain.

French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau has emerged as one of Algeria’s fiercest critics, advocating for a tougher stance, including revoking visa privileges for Algerians if deportations are rejected. Meanwhile, Macron has urged a more balanced, dialogue-based approach.

Tebboune also expressed unwavering confidence in his Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, whose ministry has accused France’s far-right factions of pursuing a "vengeful and hateful" agenda against Algeria.
