Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune is set to visit Mauritania next week, marking the first trip by an Algerian leader to the country in 37 years, according to Mauritanian media. Historically, bilateral meetings have involved travel in the other direction by Mauritania’s presidents, including five trips to Algeria by President Mohamed Cheikh Ould El Ghazouani since 2019, most recently during Algeria’s November 1st celebrations.

During his stay in Nouakchott, Tebboune will attend an African Union congress on education and employment, running from December 9 to 11. Mauritanian President Ould El Ghazouani, currently serving as AU Chair (2024–2025), will host the event.

The visit will be an opportunity to strengthen bilateral ties, as Algeria seeks to maintain its influence in the Sahel region amid a deteriorating security environment across Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. Mauritania, which recognized the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) in 1984, has been pursuing a rapprochement with Rabat  over the last few years, as it seeks to balance relations between Algeria and Morocco.
