Hundreds of Algerians gathered in Algiers on Friday for a rare authorised demonstration in support of Palestinians, according to AFP. The rally reflects widespread anger over Israel’s renewed assault on Gaza. Around 800 people assembled near the presidential palace following Friday prayers, responding to a call by the Islamist Movement of Society for Peace (MSP), Algeria’s largest legal opposition party.
Protesters chanted slogans denouncing the United States and attempted to march toward its embassy but were stopped by police. MSP leader Abdelali Hassani Cherif urged demonstrators to disperse peacefully, stating the aim was national unity in support of Palestine, not confrontation.
While Algeria has long been vocal in its support for the Palestinian cause, street protests are rarely permitted. The rally came amid escalating violence in Gaza, where over 50,000 people have reportedly been killed since Israel resumed its offensive on March 18, according to health officials in the Hamas-run territory.
