France expressed growing alarm Friday over the detention of French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal in Algeria. The 75-year-old novelist, a vocal
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has once again postponed his visit to France, accusing the former colonial power of "genocide." Relations between Algiers and Paris continue to worsen. In his first televised interview since being re-elected with over 84% of the vote, Tebboune firmly rejected any plans for the visit. When asked, he replied, "I will not go to Canossa," referring to the German expression "to walk to Canossa" has come to mean humbling oneself and asking an enemy for forgiveness. The visit, previously set for late September or early October, remains uncertain.
