Algerian patients have accumulated a debt of €45 million to hospitals in Paris in 2023, according to Europe 1. This mounting debt is widespread throughout France and stems from long-standing bilateral health agreements with Algeria. The outstanding payments have escalated diplomatic tensions, underscoring a larger issue of medical costs and international relations. Despite numerous discussions, the government of Algiers has consistently disputed these charges, leading to substantial financial deficits in French healthcare facilities. A 2017 Senate report revealed that the debt owed by Algerian patients to Parisian hospitals alone was 27 million euros, and 38 million euros nationwide.
