France freezes renewal of thousands of Algerian citizens’ residence permits
According to a report by Maghreb Intelligence more than 23,000 Algerians residing in France have had their residence permits
Key Arab nations have strongly opposed a suggestion by U.S. President Donald Trump that Jordan and Egypt should resettle approximately 2.3 million Palestinians from Gaza.
Following a meeting in Cairo, the Arab League—along with Egypt, Qatar, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the Palestinian Authority—issued a joint statement condemning the idea, The Associated Press reports.
The statement warned that such a move would "threaten the region's stability, risk expanding the conflict, and undermine prospects for peace and coexistence among its peoples."
This stance aligns with recent statements from leaders in France, Egypt, and Jordan.
Both neighboring countries and Palestinians fear that resettlement would strip Palestinians of their right to return, mirroring the displacement of approximately 700,000 Palestinians during the 1948 war that led to the creation of Israel.
Jordan, which already hosts around two million Palestinian refugees, and Egypt are also concerned about the economic burden of absorbing more displaced people.
Regional analysts interviewed by Al Jazeera caution that Jordan and Egypt—both major recipients of U.S. foreign aid—could face diplomatic pressure or coercion from Washington over the issue.
