U.S. President Joe Biden has begun a three-day trip to Angola, fulfilling his commitment to visitthe African continent. This trip marks the first presidential visit to Africa since 2015, when Barack Obama traveled to Kenya and Ethiopia, according to CNN.

Biden’s visit is seen as a significant move to showcase U.S. investment in Africa and counter China’s expanding influence in the region.

The United States has made substantial investments in a rail system designed to connect the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) with Angola’s port of Lobito. This infrastructure project aims to facilitate the transport of essential raw materials such as cobalt and lithium, both critical components for electric vehicles and batteries.

As global leaders in high-tech industries, both China and the United States are vying for dominance in these strategic fields.

On Wednesday, Biden is expected to tour the port terminal in Lobito. A U.S. official revealed that the President plans to announce new initiatives focused on global health security, including measures against infectious diseases, as well as collaborations in agribusiness, security, and the preservation of Angola’s rich cultural heritage.
