BP (British Petroleum) has opened a $351,000 fishing centre in N’Djakou, southwestern Mauritania, to support the local fishing industry and community, according to Libyan Express. The facility will benefit 250 people directly and 1,200 indirectly, and includes warehouses, fish vendor stores, a women’s processing centre, sorting facilities, and a pier with road access.

“This project will support 225 active fishermen, boost local incomes, and create jobs,” said BP Mauritania VP Mohamed El Imam. Mayor Bejel Ould Hamid praised the initiative for addressing youth unemployment and reducing migration.

The centre, implemented by Ecodev, is part of BP’s social investment linked to the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) gas field, a joint venture expected to produce 2.3 million tonnes of LNG annually. BP’s broader programme also supports health, education, and environmental initiatives in Mauritania.
