Egyptian-UK activist on hunger strike, now ill in prison
AFP reports that British Egyptian activist Alaa Abdel Fattah has become sick after spending more than 50 days on hunger
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged Egypt's President Sisi, to release Alaa Abd El-Fattah a British citizen and activist currently jailed in Cairo. Fattah was a key figure in the 2011 revolt that overthrew then Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Fattah was arrested by Egyptian authorities in September 2019 and later given a five-year sentence for "spreading false news". His mother, Laila Soueif, has been on hunger strike for 152 days in protest of the detention; PM Starmer had met with Souief in recent weeks to discuss her son’s case.
