A Tunisian National Guard officer was stabbed Thursday in the Monastir governorate by the brother of a suspected terrorist during an arrest operation, a judicial source told AFP.
Authorities attempted to detain the suspect, accused of belonging to a terrorist group, at his home. During the operation, his brother attacked the officer, stabbing him in the abdomen. The injured officer was hospitalized and underwent surgery. He is now recovering, the source confirmed.
Both brothers were taken into custody, and Tunisia's judicial division for combating terrorism has opened an investigation. The Tunisian interior ministry has not responded to requests for comment.
Tunisia has faced significant challenges with jihadist violence since the 2011 revolution that ended the rule of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. High-profile attacks in 2015 targeted tourists and police, resulting in dozens of deaths. However, authorities claim progress in countering extremism in recent years.
