Cyprus and Egypt signed a major energy agreement Monday with Eni and TotalEnergies to process and export Cypriot gas to Europe via Egypt’s LNG infrastructure, AFP reports. Gas from Cyprus’s Block 6 will be transported to Zohr facilities, then liquefied at Egypt’s Damietta LNG plant for export.
This is Cyprus’s first such deal, reinforcing its ambitions as a regional energy player. Signed in Cairo in the presence of Presidents Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Nikos Christodoulides, the agreement strengthens bilateral energy ties between the two nations. It also aligns with Europe’s push for alternative gas supplies since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
A separate memorandum of understanding was also signed with Chevron, NewMed Energy, and BG Cyprus to commercialize Cyprus’s Aphrodite gas field. These agreements highlight the Eastern Mediterranean’s growing strategic role in energy markets and reinforce Egypt’s position as a regional gas hub.
