Danish renewable energy company GreenGo Energy has signed an agreement with Mauritania to develop the Megaton Moongreen hydrogen project, its first venture in Africa, according to the trade publication Power Technology. The deal grants over 100,000 hectares near Nouakchott for the project, which will be developed in phases between 2029 and 2033.
The project will include 6GW of electrolysis, 6.8GW of onshore wind, and 6.3GW of solar capacity. Phase one, expected by 2029, will deploy 500MW of electrolysis, producing 339,000 tons of green ammonia annually. Mauritania’s low production costs, abundant solar and wind resources, and coastal accessmake it an attractive hydrogen hub.
GreenGo Energy will finance the project through strategic investors and aims to boost local socioeconomic development, including vocational training partnerships. CEO Karsten Nielsenhailed the deal as a milestone for Mauritania’s role in the global energy transition.
