Egypt prepares to lead Sudan’s reconstruction efforts

As Sudan’s two-year conflict nears a possible end, Egypt is preparing to play a major role in rebuilding its war-ravaged neighbor, The New Arab reports.

The Sudanese Army, backed by Egypt, recently declared the capital, Khartoum, free from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), marking a key turning point in the war. However, instability persists, making swift reconstruction efforts both critical and challenging.

Since the conflict erupted in April 2023, Sudan’s infrastructure has been devastated, and millions have been displaced. Egypt has taken in hundreds of thousands of Sudanese refugees and has supported the Sudanese army both diplomatically and militarily. Now, Cairo is set to take the lead in the nation’s recovery.

Egyptian Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli reaffirmed this commitment in February during talks with Sudanese officials, unveiling plans for Egyptian firms to spearhead reconstruction efforts. The Egyptian government has reportedly compiled a list of 52 companies prepared to take on major projects, with some already initiating preliminary work.

While funding remains a concern, reports suggest Sudan may leverage its gold reserves or allocate agricultural land as payment for reconstruction. Given Egypt’s vast experience in large-scale infrastructure projects across the region, Sudanese officials appear eager to grant Egypt a significant role in the rebuilding process—further strengthening the historical ties between the two nations.
