Morocco’s Princess Lalla Meryem and France’s First Lady Brigitte Macron have launched a major campaign to combat school
The Egyptian Olympic Committee has reportedly disqualified cyclist Sahd Saeed from participating in the Paris 2024 Olympics following a controversial incident during Egypt’s Women’s Cycling Championship.
The committee’s Board of Directors made the decision after significant public outcry following Saeed’s collision with fellow cyclist Jana Aliwa near the finish line.
According to the BBC, social media was flooded with comments condemning Saeed's inclusion in the Olympics, with one comment stating, “Best of luck to all participants except for the rider who pushed her colleague. She’s not the best person to represent Egypt.”
Cairoscene.com reported that the committee found evidence supporting claims that Saeed had intentionally caused the collision. Aliwa was knocked into a concrete barrier, resulting in a concussion and a broken collarbone. The committee stated, “She violated the controls, regulations, customs, values, and ethics put in place.”
In addition to the Olympic ban, Saeed has been barred from participating in any Egyptian competitions until April 26, 2025, and fined 100 Swiss francs.
Cycling is not widely popular in Egypt, but President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi often encourages both men and women to engage in the sport.
