An Egyptian who joined Syrian rebels against President Bashar al-Assad has become a prominent figure in an online campaign demanding the removal of Egypt's President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, reports Middle East Eye.
Ahmed al-Mansour, who reportedly left Egypt in 2013 to fight in Syria, has been sharing frequent videos criticizing el-Sisi's regime, using the hashtag “It’s your turn, Dictator”, which has been gaining traction on Egyptian social media.
In a recent video posted on X, al-Mansour declared, “The state of terror that Sisi has us living in requires our initiative to reignite the revolution.”
Al-Mansour left Egypt the same year el-Sisi led a coup ousting Mohamed Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically elected Islamist president. He is believed to have participated in protests against el-Sisi at Rabaa Square in August 2013, according to The New Arab. Human Rights Watch says roughly 1000 people were killed by security forces in that uprising.
Since el-Sisi’s rise to power, rights organizations have accused his government of widespread human rights abuses, estimating that Egypt holds approximately 65,000 political prisoners.
Following the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, el-Sisi has expressed concern about revolutionary movements spreading to Egypt, implementing policies to bar Syrians without temporary residency permits from entering the country.
