Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki dismissed claims that the October 2024 tripartite agreement with Egypt and Somalia is anti-Ethiopian, calling them
Egypt's Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, recently visited Port Sudan, located along the Red Sea, for discussions with General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, the head of Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council (TSC). During the meeting, he conveyed a message from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, emphasizing Egypt's unwavering support and solidarity with Sudan, according to reports from the Middle East Monitor citing Anadolu.
The TSC, backed by Sudan's military, has been locked in a brutal civil war with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group, for the past 21 months. The conflict has led to mass displacement, widespread famine, and disease, with the death toll ranging from 27,000 to over 150,000.
Egypt Today reports the Egyptian government is not taking sides in the conflict but rather expressing solidarity with the people of Sudan. However, the RSF has accused Egypt of targeting its forces with drone strikes south of Khartoum. Egypt has denied the allegations.
In addition to discussing the conflict, talks also addressed the humanitarian crisis, including the estimated 500,000 Sudanese refugees who have fled to Egypt since the outbreak of violence in April 2023. According to the Sudan Tribune, based in Paris, Egypt's Foreign Minister also pledged to advocate for Sudan's reinstatement in the African Union.
