A high-level delegation from the European Union (EU) is set to visit the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott on March 7. According to reports, in French media outlet Africa Intelligence, the meeting “will formalize the signing of the agreement on the fight against illegal immigration between the EU and Mauritania.”
Earlier in February the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen and the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visited Nouakchott and announced an aid package worth up to 200 million euros to Mauritania, with the aim of intercepting more migrant canoes seeking to reach the Canaries.
