The EU on Wednesday named Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, India, Kosovo, Bangladesh, and Colombia as "safe countries of origin" to fast-track migrant returns, making asylum claims from their citizens harder. The move, criticized by rights groups, presumes such applications lack merit, enabling quicker rejections. "Faster asylum decisions are essential," said EU migration commissioner Magnus Brunner, citing backlogs. The proposal aims to curb irregular migration but may face legal challenges.
