Nicolas Schmit, the European socialists' lead candidate for the upcoming June elections, has called for a revision of the multi-million euro agreements Brussels has made with neighboring countries to curb irregular migration.
Schmit, currently serving as the European Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, has diverged from the stance of President Ursula von der Leyen, who has actively supported such deals over the past year with countries including Tunisia, Mauritania, and Egypt.
These agreements, aimed at strengthening local economies and reducing irregular migration, have garnered broad support from European leaders.
