Josep Borrell, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs held talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fatah el-Sisi in Cairo Monday, according to Egyptian media. The visiting delegation also included the EU's special representative for the Middle East peace process The primary focus of the meeting was the ongoing war in Gaza and broader regional tensions. President Sisi outlined Egypt’s efforts to broker a ceasefire and negotiate a prisoner exchange, emphasizing that such steps are crucial to alleviating the humanitarian crisis and advancing the two-state solution. He warned that continued escalation could widen the conflict and called on the international community, including the EU, to play a more active role in halting the violence.
Egyptian media reported that both sides praised the upward trajectory in bilateral relations, and discussed expanding cooperation in trade, energy, and migration.
Borrell acknowledged Egypt’s stabilizing role in the region and affirmed the EU’s commitment to close cooperation with Cairo.
