Tunisia's presidential race officially started Monday as Fethi Krimi, a previously unknown 59-year-old labourer, became the first candidate to submit his official candidacy, AFP reports. Krimi lodged his application at the ISIE electoral authority in Tunis, according to local and social media.
High-profile candidates who have declared their intention to run include rapper K2 Rhym, retired military official Kamel Akrout, and former minister Mondher Zenaidi. Incumbent President Kais Saied, who seized extensive powers in 2021, is seeking re-election amidst widespread criticism of his autocratic leadership.
Human rights groups have condemned what they see as a rollback of freedoms since Saied's power grab. Key political figures critical of Saied have been imprisoned, prompting critics to call the October poll an election without an opposition.
Over a hundred potential candidates have begun the application process despite stringent eligibility criteria. To qualify, candidates must gather 10,000 voter signatures, be at least 40 years old, hold only Tunisian citizenship, and meet other specific conditions, complicating the candidacy process.
