Tunisia has dismissed veteran coach Faouzi Benzarti just three months into his latest tenure, following a shocking 1-0 home loss to Comoros in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. Reuters reports. The 74-year-old, on his fourth stint as Tunisia's coach, was appointed in September and initially led Tunisia to two group victories over Madagascar and Gambia. However, a recent dip saw Tunisia claim only one point from back-to-back games with Comoros, drawing 1-1 away. The home defeat to Comoros was Tunisia's first in a qualifier since Botswana beat them in 2010, also in Cup of Nations qualification.
Despite the Comoros setback, Tunisia still leads Group A and remains in contention to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, needing a top-two finish. The team will conclude the qualifiers next month with return matches against Gambia and Madagascar. Securing a spot would allow Tunisia to extend its record to 17 consecutive Africa Cup of Nations finals appearances.
