Real Madrid forward Brahim Díaz, 24, has chosen to represent Morocco over Spain at the international level, according to the Spanish sports daily Marca. Born in Malaga to a Spanish mother and Moroccan father, Díaz has played for Spain at various youth levels and has one senior cap. The decision puts an end to months of speculation as to which country he would select. Diaz had previously expressed his preference to play for La Roja and had rejected several efforts by Morocco to convince him to play for the Atlas Lions.
Díaz's career progression, including a successful loan spell at AC Milan and recent standout performances for Real Madrid, had fueled speculation of a Spain call-up. Morocco's national team coach, Walid Regragui reportedly played a pivotal role in the decision and had offered him a starting role, unlike Spain’s coach Luis de la Fuente. Spanish media calls the decision a loss for Spain and blames Lafuente's inaction for missing out on the Malaga-born player.
Morocco, a surprise package at the 2022 World Cup, aims to include Díaz in their squad for upcoming fixtures against Angola and Mauritania.
