Robert Greenaway, former senior official in the White House and National Security Council said Morocco would be an ideal location for the headquarters of U.S. Africa Command (Africom), in a statement on his account on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Greenaway’s statement comes after last week’s visit to Morocco by U.S. Marine Corps General Michael Langley, the commander of Africom.
The U.S. Africa Command is currently based in Stuttgart, Germany and there have been some discussions on its relocation. In a hearing before the Senate Army Committee last year, U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan opined it was important for Africom to be based in Africa and identified Morocco as a potential host, citing its stability, and close relations with United States.
In response, General Langley acknowledged the advantages of locating the command in Africa while asserting the benefits of Stuttgart’s proximity to multiple U.S. partners.
Africom oversees activities between the U.S. military and over 50 African countries, including Africa Lion, the largest military exercise on the continent, hosted by Morocco.
