France’s military presence in the Sahel has come to an end with the handover of its last base in Chad, according to AFP. In a ceremony in N’Djamena, the Kossei base was formally transferred to the Chadian army last week, concluding a phased withdrawal that began after Chad abruptly ended military cooperation in November.

Once a linchpin of France’s regional strategy, Chad was Paris’s final foothold after its forced departures from Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. These Sahel states, now pivoting towards Russia, expelled French troops following military coups. At its peak, France’s Operation Barkhane deployed 5,000 troops to combat jihadists, but dwindling local support has reshaped Paris’s African posture.

France is now reducing its military footprint in Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, and Gabon while reinforcing its Djibouti base. President Emmanuel Macron, lamenting Africa’s lack of gratitude for France’s decade-long campaign, must now recalibrate relations with a region increasingly distancing itself from its former colonial power.
