According to reporting by Reuters, a finance ministry employee has been placed under formal investigation, by French prosecutors, on suspicion of spying for Algeria. The employee is accused of handing details on Algerian asylum seekers, including known opponents of the current Algerian government, over to an Algerian contact working at the Algerian consulate in Paris. Diplomatic tensions between France and Algeria escalated in recent months, with France threatening to review a decades-old agreement that allows Algerian citizens easier access to move to France, unless Algeria agrees to take back citizens French authorities deem criminals and wish to deport.
