Gaza’s Rafah border crossing with Egypt reopened on Saturday following the fourth exchange of hostages and prisoners under a ceasefire agreement, AFP reports. Fifty Palestinian patients crossed into Egypt, and humanitarian aid is expected to resume.

The crossing had been closed since Israeli forces seized its Palestinian side in May 2024. The European Union has deployed a monitoring mission at Rafah to support Palestinian border personnel and facilitate medical transfers.

Saturday’s swap saw Hamas release three Israeli hostages, including two dual nationals, in exchange for 90 Palestinian prisoners. Since the truce began on January 19, 15 hostages have been released in return for hundreds of detainees.

Under the ceasefire, Israeli forces are set to withdraw from Gaza’s densely populated areas, though reports suggest a buffer zone of up to 800 meters inside Gaza will remain in place from Rafah to Beit Hanun.
