The leaders of Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia held a summit Thursday, pledging to strengthen regional security and cooperation amid growing tensions in the Horn of Africa, AFP reports. The meeting, held in Asmara, comes against the backdrop of ongoing conflicts in Sudan, a controversial maritime agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland, and instability in the Red Sea, where Houthi rebels from Yemen have launched attacks on vessels.

During the summit, the leaders emphasized the importance of respecting the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of nations in the region. They agreed to enhance cooperation, particularly to support Somalia in addressing its internal challenges, fighting terrorism, and safeguarding its borders. The leaders also discussed the crises in Sudan and the Red Sea and committed to forming a tripartite committee for ongoing strategic collaboration. This new regional alliance signals closer ties between Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia, while Ethiopia remains excluded amid rising regional tensions.
