ICC Prosecutor says Sudan’s Darfur suspect Ali Kushayb ordered atrocities in 2003-2004
Former senior commander of the Sudanese Janjaweed militia Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman, also known as Ali Kushayb (C) appears for a hearing over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the Darfur conflict in 2003-04 at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, on October 19, 2023. Abd-Al-Rahman faces 31 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity for atrocities in the country's Darfur region, scene of bitter bloodshed almost two decades ago.

The ICC’s chief prosecutor stated Wednesday that Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman, known as Ali Kushayb, commanded Janjaweed militias in Sudan’s Darfur region during 2003-2004, ordering atrocities including murder, rape, and pillaging. Abd-Al-Rahman, denying charges, claims he is misidentified. Prosecutor Karim Khan said witnesses detailed mass killings, torture, and village destruction, asserting the case was proven beyond reasonable doubt. This marks the first ICC trial addressing Darfur’s war crimes two decades ago.
