In Africa, low expectations and some hopes for a Second Trump Presidency

African leaders welcomed Donald Trump’s election with hopes for fruitful partnerships, yet expectations remain low. U.S. policy has long sidelined Africa, focusing mainly on countering Russia and China, said Charles Ray, Foreign Policy Research Institute’s Africa Program chair. Ray noted that while President Biden called Africa a key partner, little action followed. Trump's “transactional, ego-driven” approach will likely deprioritize Africa, leaving it at the “very bottom” of his agenda, Ray added.
