Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held talks with his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty, on Wednesday to address rising tensions in Gaza, maritime security in the Red Sea, and Iran’s upcoming indirect negotiations with the United States, according to statements from both countries, as reported by the Jerusalem Post.

The ministers reportedly emphasized the importance of halting Israeli military operations in Gaza and called for the restoration of a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel to prevent further regional escalation. They also voiced concern over U.S. airstrikes targeting the Houthis in Yemen.

According to Egyptian state media, Abdelatty underscored the urgency of safeguarding freedom of navigation in the Red Sea. Houthi forces, supported by Iran, have launched attacks on vessels linked to the U.S. and Israel during the war in Gaza citing solidarity with Palestinians. These actions have disrupted international shipping routes and inflicted economic harm on Egypt, which relies heavily on the Suez Canal for revenue.

Earlier in the week, Araghchi also met with Algerian officials, reaffirming ties with Iran’s longstanding ally.
