An Israeli delegation in Cairo is negotiating a 42-day extension of the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire, two Egyptian security sources told Reuters. Hamas opposes the move, demanding that talks proceed to the second phase, the sources said. The second phase is meant to include steps that will lead to a permanent end to the war.

The first phase of the ceasefire is set to expire on Saturday, with no clarity on what will happen if no agreement is reached. Egypt and Qatar, with U.S. support, continue to mediate between the warring sides.

Hamas has called on the international community to pressure Israel into implementing the second phase without delay. According to Israeli officials, Israel’s proposal would see Hamas release three hostages per week in exchange for Palestinians held in Israeli prisons. The outcome of these negotiations will determine whether the temporary truce holds or fighting resumes.
