Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar harshly criticized Irish President Michael Higgins on Tuesday, calling him an “anti-Semitic liar” over comments suggesting that Israel intends to build settlements in Egypt, The Times of Israel reports.

Higgins’ remarks—made without evidence—came after Israel announced on Sunday that it would close its embassy in Dublin. The move was Israel’s response to Ireland’s decision to advocate for a broader definition of genocide at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) as part of its case against Israel.

Maurice Cohen, chair of Ireland’s Jewish Representative Council, criticized Ireland’s ICJ involvement, arguing that it “oversimplifies a highly complex and tragic conflict” and unfairly isolates Israel, according to The Guardian.

Ireland’s Foreign Minister defended the decision, stating it was “motivated solely by respect for international humanitarian law.”

Despite accusations of antisemitism, Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris reaffirmed his stance in support of Palestinians. “You know what I think is reprehensible? Killing children. You know what I think is reprehensible? Seeing the scale of civilian deaths we’ve witnessed in Gaza,” Harris told reporters on Monday, as reported by The Guardian. “What’s also reprehensible is people being left to starve and humanitarian aid not reaching those in need.”
