Italy's energy giant Eni plans to start exploration in North Africa's Ghadames basin in 2025, reaffirming its view of Libya as a crucial country for oil and gas production, Reuters reports. Martina Opizzi, Eni's head of North Africa and Levant, announced the plans during a panel discussion on Libya's energy sector in Rome, organized by Energy Capital & Power.
"We have never stopped seeing Libya as a key region for upstream activities," Opizzi said, adding that Eni also plans offshore exploration in the near future.
Libya, a major oil producer, has seen political instability impact the industry. Last month oil exports from key ports were halted due to a standoff between rival political factions over control of the central bank and oil revenue. Although production began to recover in September, the dispute remains unresolved, threatening the possibility of future disruptions to the industry.
