The French newspaper Le Monde is reporting that Morocco is hoping that with the return to the White House of President Trump, the country expects to bolster its diplomatic gains regarding the Moroccan Sahara dispute. Le Monde reported that Morocco is “leveraging what is known as ‘consulate diplomacy’ to strengthen its legitimacy in the region.” One considerable diplomatic breakthrough would be the opening of a U.S. consulate in the disputed territory. The new U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to talk by phone with Moroccan FM Bourita on Friday.
