Libya’s farms face devastation as desert locust swarms spread across the south, threatening crops and pastures, the Libya Observer reports. Experts warn control efforts are failing due to a lack of equipment. Hussein Al-Breiki of Libya’s Locust Control Committee cautioned that without urgent intervention, losses could reach thousands of hectares, worsening food insecurity.

According to the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), single swarm of 80 million locusts can cover one square kilometre and devour the equivalent of food consumed by 35,000 people in a single day.
