The 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in Marrakech has solidified the city’s reputation as a cultural hub, showcasing emerging and established African artists to a global audience, AFP reports. The event, which featured works from 30 galleries across 14 countries, drew collectors and curators from around the world.

Unlike larger fairs such as Art Basel or Frieze, 1-54’s intimate setting fosters meaningful connections. Senegalese curator Aissa Dione highlighted its exclusivity, which enhances visibility for artists. Sales at the fair reached into the millions, with collectors acquiring works from artists such as Ghana’s Amoako Boafo and Nigeria’s Chigozie Obi.

The fair’s impact extends beyond its venue, with local galleries and studios capitalizing on the influx of visitors. Marrakech’s growing prominence in the art world has even encouraged expansion from galleries in Casablanca. As founder Touria El Glaoui noted, “The fair is now an unmissable event.”
