Mauritania has become the 55th state, and the sixth in Africa, to join the Partnership on Information and Democracy, an initiative launched in 2019 by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and France. This move reflects the nation’s commitment to promoting reliable information and combating misinformation in an era of heightened media challenges.
Mauritania’s government pledged to work with other member states and the Forum on Information and Democracy to develop policies supporting media freedom and pluralism. The country’s Minister for Culture, Hussein Ould Medou, emphasized the government’s resolve to uphold freedom of expression and individual liberties.
RSF praised Mauritania’s progress, noting its dramatic rise in the 2024 World Press Freedom Index from 86th to 33rd place. This achievement signals a turning point for the Mauritanian press, as the country seeks to embed democratic principles in its information ecosystem while advancing its international standing.
