France’s TotalEnergies and its partner Chariot Energy recently wrapped up a feasibility study on a huge proposed green hydrogen project in Mauritania.
Dubbed “Project Nour”, the proposed development site covers two onshore areas totaling around 5000 square kilometers in the country’s northern region. The area has tremendous potential for large scale wind and solar projects that are needed for low-cost hydrogen production.
Chariot says the study supports implementing a phased development approach with aims to produce 150,000 tons per annum of green hydrogen.
Additionally, the study verified that the project stands to gain advantages from its geographical proximity to Europe and its access to the established deep-sea port located at Nouadhibou.
“With the completion of the feasibility study of Project Nour, Mauritania has just taken an important step forward on the path to realizing its green hydrogen ambitions,” said Nani Chrougha, Mauritania’s Minister of Petroleum, Mines & Energy.
Mauritania aims to be the largest producer and exporter of hydrogen on the African continent. It has full EU support. Last year, Mauritania was selected as a key green hydrogen partner in the bloc’s ‘Global Gateway’ initiative.
