A Moroccan court has sentenced activist Fouad Abdelmoumni to six months in prison for spreading false allegations, defamation, and insulting public bodies, his lawyer Mohamed Nouini told AFP. The charges stem from a Facebook post in which Abdelmoumni accused Morocco of spying on France.

Abdelmoumni was detained in October 2024 but released after two days. His lawyer argued that he should have been prosecuted under the Press Code, which does not include prison sentences, rather than the Penal Code. His sentence will only be enforced if upheld on appeal.

The post was published during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Morocco, which signaled a diplomatic thaw after three years of strained relations, partly due to espionage allegations. In 2021, Morocco was accused of using Israeli-made Pegasus spyware to monitor prominent figures, including Macron, claims Morocco has denied as baseless.
