A Moroccan military delegation visited Mauritania this week to strengthen bilateral defense cooperation, Moroccan media reports citing a statement from the Mauritanian army. Led by the deputy head of Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces social services division, the delegation focused on exchanging experience and best practices.

The visit included meetings with Mauritanian military institutions such as the Directorate for the Sons of Martyrs and the Association of Armed and Security Forces. It followed up on commitments made during sessions of the Morocco-Mauritania Joint Military Commission, established in 2020 to formalize growing security collaboration.

The visit reflects Rabat and Nouakchott’s broader effort to bolster military ties amid shifting regional dynamics in the Maghreb and Sahel. It also comes days after Mauritania signed separate defense agreements with Algeria, signaling Nouakchott’s strategic balancing act between regional powers.
