Mauritania’s Foreign Minister, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, has hailed relations with Morocco as being at their strongest in recent years, according to regional media. Speaking in Rabat after talks with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, he credited a December 2024 meeting between King Mohammed VI and President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani for accelerating bilateral cooperation.

At last year’s meeting, the heads of state reaffirmed commitments to joint initiatives, including the African-Atlantic Gas Pipeline and improving Sahel nations’ access to the Atlantic. Mauritania also acknowledged Morocco’s diplomatic support during its African Union leadership.

In his comments Wednesday, Ould Merzoug emphasized continued collaboration on regional and international issues, underscoring Morocco’s role as a key partner. With economic and political ties deepening, both nations are positioning themselves as strategic players in North and West Africa’s evolving geopolitical landscape.
