A widespread internet disruption on Thursday impacted multiple countries across West and Central Africa, with Ivory Coast, Liberia, and Benin experiencing the most severe outages.
The interruption in internet services, affecting both fixed and mobile connections, has been attributed to issues with the MainOne and ACE undersea fiber optic cables.
The cause of the damage to the cables is yet to be determined.
In total, eight West African nations felt the impact of the outage, with the aforementioned three countries bearing the brunt of the disruptions.
Maroc Telecom Group, a leading Moroccan telecom provider, assisted its West and Central African neighbors during the internet disruption.
Customers of Moov Africa - part of Maroc Telecom group in Ivory Coast - benefited from an alternative connection via the West Africa submarine cable, which links the region to Europe through Morocco, ensuring continued access to the internet amidst the outage.
The Moov Africa team's quick response was key to resolving the issue. They expanded capacity on the West Africa submarine cable and allowed providers to maintain customer connectivity.
