Morocco is hosting a two-day retreat of the United Nations Human Rights Council, marking the first such event in the Middle East and North Africa. The retreat is bringing together Council members, regional group coordinators, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and civil society organizations. It is an opportunity for Morocco to help refine the Council’s work under its leadership, and address pressing global human rights challenges. Earlier this year, Morocco secured 30 votes to chair the Council, defeating South Africa’s bid, which received 17 votes.
