Brazil’s statistics agency finds Morocco is the country’s third largest supplier of fertilizers, as reported by the Russian media outlet RIA Novosti.

Data from June 2023 finds Morocco’s fertilizer exports to Brazil grew by 2.3 times as compared to the same period a year ago for a total a value of $147 million.

Russia remains the top fertilizer exporter to Brazil, with sales increasing by 18% year-on-year to $338 million in June.

Canada is the second largest fertilizer exporter to the south American nation. Its exports grew by 19% to $184 million. Rounding out the top 5 were China and Egypt with exports valued at $127 million and $80 million, respectively.

Morocco has become a substantial producer of fertilizers in recent years thanks to its abundant reserves of phosphate rock – used to make phosphorous, one of three vital nutrients needed in the production of fertilizers.

According to Statista, as of 2023, there were reserves of roughly 50 billion metric tons of phosphate rock in Morocco making it the country with the world’s largest reserves.

According to a report published by The Conversation, Morocco possesses over 70% of the world’s phosphate rock reserves, the key raw material used in the production of phosphorus fertilizers.

This abundance of resources, combined with significant investments in fertilizer production capacity, has enabled Morocco to become a major player in the international fertilizer market.
